Sleep Apnea & Airway-Focused Treatment

Breathe Better. Sleep Better. Live Better.

Your smile and your airway are more connected than you might think. At Owtad Orthodontics, we take an airway-focused approach to orthodontic care—recognizing that proper breathing and jaw development are foundational to long-term health. For patients of all ages, evaluating the airway can uncover hidden issues behind snoring, fatigue, mouth breathing, and even behavioral symptoms.

What Is Airway-Focused Orthodontics?

Airway-focused treatment considers the structure and function of the jaws, nasal passages, and throat- especially how they impact breathing during sleep. When the airway is narrow or obstructed, it can lead to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) or other sleep-disordered breathing conditions. These issues affect more than just rest. They can influence growth, concentration, mood, and cardiovascular health.

Orthodontists trained in airway evaluation may be able to identify signs of restriction and collaborate with other specialists when needed. The goal is to support healthy breathing patterns alongside orthodontic correction.

Signs of a Potential Airway Issue

  • Snoring or gasping during sleep
  • Chronic mouth breathing
  • Daytime fatigue or brain fog
  • Trouble focusing (especially in children)
  • Teeth grinding at night
  • Narrow dental arches or recessed jaws

Orthodontics and Sleep Apnea

While severe sleep apnea is typically diagnosed through a sleep study, orthodontic treatment may support better breathing by:

  • Expanding narrow arches to increase nasal airflow
  • Correcting jaw positioning to reduce airway obstruction
  • Guiding facial growth in children to prevent future issues
  • Coordinating with sleep physicians or ENTs for integrated care

A Holistic View of Health

Sleep and breathing issues aren’t always obvious—and they don’t affect only adults. In children, disrupted breathing can mimic attention-related challenges or lead to developmental concerns. At Owtad Orthodontics, we look beyond the teeth to ensure we’re supporting total wellness from the inside out.
