Glossary Of Orthodontic Terms

Orthodontic Terms You Should Know

Orthodontic treatment comes with its own set of terms, and we know it can feel overwhelming at first. This guide explains some of the most common orthodontic terms you may hear during your treatment — in simple, easy-to-understand language.

Archwire

The archwire is the thin metal wire that runs through your braces and gently guides your teeth into proper alignment. It works together with the brackets to apply controlled pressure over time.

Band

A band is a small metal ring that fits around a molar (back tooth). Bands provide extra support for certain orthodontic appliances and help secure parts of the braces system.

Bonding

Bonding is the process of attaching brackets to the teeth using a special dental adhesive. The adhesive is strong enough to hold brackets in place during treatment, but safe to remove when treatment is complete.

Bracket

A bracket is the small metal or ceramic piece bonded to each tooth. Brackets hold the archwire in place and help guide tooth movement throughout treatment.

Crossbite

A crossbite occurs when one or more upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth instead of outside them. This can affect chewing and jaw alignment and is commonly treated with braces, aligners, or expanders.

Elastics (Rubber Bands)

Elastics are small rubber bands used with braces or aligners to help correct bite alignment. They connect specific teeth to guide the jaws into proper positioning. Wearing elastics exactly as instructed is essential for staying on schedule.

Impressions

Impressions are molds of your teeth used to create study models or orthodontic appliances. Today, many impressions are taken digitally using comfortable 3D scanners.

Malocclusion

Malocclusion is the medical term for a misaligned bite or improper positioning of the teeth or jaws. Common types include overbite, underbite, crossbite, and crowding.

Retainer

A retainer is worn after orthodontic treatment to help maintain your new smile. Retainers can be removable or fixed, and wearing them as instructed is essential to prevent teeth from shifting.

Orthodontic Wax

Orthodontic wax is a soft, protective material placed over brackets or wires that may cause irritation. It helps prevent sore spots on the lips and cheeks, especially during the early stages of treatment.
