Life With Braces
Life With Braces
Getting braces is an exciting step toward a healthier, more confident smile. While there’s a short adjustment period, most patients quickly find that braces become a normal part of daily life. With the right habits and a little preparation, staying comfortable and on track is easy.
Daily Care & Good Habits
Good oral hygiene is especially important during orthodontic treatment. Braces create extra spaces where food and plaque can collect, so staying consistent helps protect your teeth and gums.
- Brush thoroughly at least twice a day (and ideally after meals)
- Floss daily using floss threaders, orthodontic floss, or a water flosser
- Rinse with fluoride to strengthen enamel
For more detailed guidance, visit our Oral Hygiene with Braces page.
Eating With Braces
Being mindful of what you eat helps prevent broken brackets and unnecessary repairs.
- Avoid hard, sticky, or crunchy foods
- Cut foods into smaller pieces
- Choose softer foods, especially right after adjustments
You can find a full list of foods to enjoy and avoid on our Foods to Avoid with Braces page.
Sports & Physical Activities
If you play sports or participate in physical activities, wearing a mouthguard is essential.
We can provide a braces-friendly mouthguard designed to protect your teeth, braces, and lips while you stay active.
Playing Instruments or Other Activities
Some patients who play wind instruments or participate in activities that involve the mouth may need a short adjustment period. Using orthodontic wax and practicing regularly can help make this transition smooth and comfortable.
Routine Appointments
Most patients visit us every 6–8 weeks for adjustments. These visits are an important part of keeping your treatment progressing on schedule.
Staying consistent with appointments helps ensure the best results in the shortest amount of time.
Managing Discomfort
It’s normal to feel mild soreness for a day or two after adjustments.
Helpful tips include:
- Eating soft foods
- Using over-the-counter pain relief if needed
- Applying orthodontic wax to any areas that feel irritating
Discomfort usually fades quickly as your mouth adjusts.
School, Work & On-the-Go Tips
We recommend keeping a small braces care kit with you, especially during school or work hours. Include:
- A travel toothbrush
- Floss or floss picks
- Orthodontic wax
- Extra elastics (if prescribed)
This makes it easy to stay comfortable and confident wherever you are.
