What Do Retainers Do?
After your teeth have been moved into their ideal position, they need time to settle into place. Retainers hold the teeth in their new alignment, allowing surrounding bone and tissue to adapt and stabilize. Without a retainer, there’s a risk of relapse—where teeth gradually shift back toward their original position.
Types of Retainers
There are two main categories of retainers:
- Removable Retainers: These can be taken out for eating, brushing, or special occasions. They’re convenient and easy to clean, but they must be worn as directed to remain effective.
- Fixed (Bonded) Retainers: These are discreet wires attached behind the teeth, typically on the lower front teeth. They stay in place full-time, providing constant support.
Each type has its advantages, and the best choice depends on your needs, preferences, and orthodontic history.
When and How Long Should You Wear Them?
Retention is a lifelong commitment. While wear time may decrease over the years, some form of retainer use is often recommended indefinitely to maintain your results. Your orthodontist will guide you on a wear schedule that fits your treatment plan and goals.
Caring for Your Retainer
Like any dental appliance, retainers need regular cleaning and gentle handling. Avoid hot water, harsh chemicals, or bending the material. Store removable retainers in a ventilated case when not in use, and avoid wrapping them in tissues where they can easily be thrown away.
